New Year Honours Shine Spotlight on Leaders in Agricultural Science

The 2026 New Year Honours list has highlighted the crucial role of science and innovation in shaping the future of British agriculture, with leading figures from research, education and farming safety recognised for their contributions to the sector.

Among those honoured, Professor Simon Pearson, founding director of the Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology (LIAT) at the University of Lincoln, received an MBE for services to agricultural innovation and education. His work has helped drive advances in AI, robotics, crop science and sustainability — positioning LIAT as a key hub within the UK’s agri-tech ecosystem.

Under his leadership, LIAT has become widely regarded as an example of how academic research can support productivity and resilience across British farms, contributing to achievements such as the University of Lincoln’s Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2023.

The list also recognises several other prominent figures in farming science and policy.

Professor Lorna Dawson has been awarded a damehood in recognition of her outstanding contribution to agricultural science and environmental forensics. Her pioneering research into soil science has supported everything from sustainable land management to major investigative work, helping shape policy and best practice across the farming sector and beyond.
